Microstructure of freestanding single-crystalline Ni2MnGa thin films
2011
Abstract The complex crystal structure and variant distribution of single-crystalline freestanding Ni–Mn–Ga films was studied in detail using X-ray diffraction in two- and four-circle geometry. Selective chemical etching of a chromium buffer layer facilitates the release of the rigid MgO substrate that would inhibit magnetically induced reorientation (MIR) of variants. The substrate-constrained as well as the freestanding films possess identical crystal structure featuring a seven-layered (pseudo-)orthorhombic modulation (7 M/14 M). Of the 12 different variants observed before and after releasing the film from the substrate, four are predominantly represented. These have the short c -axis a…
Morphology and magnetism of Fe on vicinal W(110) surfaces with different step orientation
2000
Abstract Nanostructures of monolayer height of single-crystalline Fe(1 1 0) films were grown on stepped W(1 1 0) surfaces. The growth mode strongly depends on the step orientation of the substrate. Continuous stripes are formed at steps along the [1 0 0] direction whereas triangular shaped islands grow on substrates with [1 −1 0]-oriented step edges. No ferromagnetic order was found in submonolayer films grown on [1 −1 0]-steps. The nanostripe array on [1 0 0] steps shows a ferromagnetic phase-transition with a critical behavior different from the Ising-like phase transition observed for submonolayer films grown on smooth W(1 1 0). The magnetic easy axis in the samples is oriented parallel …
Phenomenology of current-skyrmion interactions in thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy
2014
We study skyrmions in magnetic thin films with structural inversion asymmetry perpendicular to the film plane. We determine the magnetization texture of a single skyrmion and its dependence on the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction relative to the magnetostatic energy. Furthermore, we construct a phenomenological model that describes the interaction between the motion of skyrmions and electric currents to lowest order in spin-orbit coupling. We estimate the experimental verifiable velocities for current-driven motion of skyrmion textures based on available results obtained from domain walls dynamics.
Free-standing smectic LC elastomer films
2001
ABSTRACTWe probe the mesophase transitions and layer structures in thin ordered smectic liquid crystalline elastomer films by means of x-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Oriented elastomer films of submicrometer thickness are produced by crosslinking freely suspended smectic polymer films. After crosslinking, the mesomorphism is similar to that of the precursor polymer. Smectic layers align parallel to the film plane. The layer spacing increases with temperature in the SmC* phase while it decays above the SmC*-SmA transition.
